My favorite aunt has always been Mimi, her "real name" being Mary Jane. She recently sent us a St. Patrick's Day card featuring Ben's favorite character, Snoopy. I often find him in his room reading it and giggling at the funny faces Snoopy is making in the card. Today we had this conversation about it...
Ben: "Who gived this to us?"
Mom: "Mimi sent it to us."
A very puzzled Ben:"You-you? Why did you send it?"
"No, Mimi is your great-aunt, that's her name." A trip follows to the living room to show a picture.
Ben- "That not you!" (tone-silly mommy)
Once again, mom: "No, this is Mimi"
Obviously the conversation was not going anywhere and Ben lost interest.
Later, in his crib, he's looking at a book that Mimi sent us. He asked again," Who gived this to us?"
Mom (dreading the direction we are going): "Mimi did."
Ben: "You-you? Why you give it to us?"
Mom: "Aunt Mimi sent it to you. Not mommy. Aunt Mimi"
Ben: "That's not your name." At this point, his little mind just cannot process this concept and he gives up again...until the next time.
For me, it always feels a little like listening to Abbott and Costello-Who's on First?
(and I can't begin calling her Aunt Mary Jane because my dad's new friend's name is Mary Jane and we adults have a hard enough time keeping them straight.)
