― Henry Ward Beecher
While I can't remember any specific instruction from her, I'm sure that my mom instilled this idea of looking for mercies every day. During her battle with pancreatic cancer, she consistently commented that she was thankful for each day. At her memorial service, this was mentioned over and over by her co-workers. It truly is a choice to look for blessings each day, but it is worth the effort. This one day had so many discoveries...
Last week my dad called me to ask if I could take him to the hospital for a pacemaker replacement. His device was acting up and the techs wanted it swapped out as soon as possible. Monday was the earliest day they could do it, and I would need to be there from 10-4. Typically we are at our Classical Conversations group on Mondays, but this Monday is our break between quarters. My day was open other than a meeting at 4 with our director. Graciously she moved the meeting back so that I could still try to make it after taking my dad home.
- Maggie courageously picked up the recipe I had started and finished preparing the soup for the meeting.
- A friend stopped by my house to pick up the food I was bringing to the meeting, even though it took her out of her way a bit.
- The doctor, although he was running about a 1/2 hour behind, was able to work quickly and we still left before 4.
- The procedure was successful.
- The hospital has a new food court with Qdoba...always a good day.
- A friend not only took my two younger kids for the afternoon but took them to the park and for ice cream at McDonalds.
- Nate left early for work in order to drop off his siblings so they didn't have to be gone all day.
- Maggie was able to work at the horse farm and ride in the woods with her instructor thanks to the 60 degree day in February.
- I was able to keep my tongue during some difficult conversations with my dad.
The day ended with a wonderful night out with my fellow CC moms. Hugs, prayers, and understanding from them when I finally arrived at 5:30. Delicious food, laughter, and games (in an atmosphere of beauty) made for a wonderful evening.
At the beginning of the year, I chose to schedule a break week every 6 weeks, following the CC schedule. Each quarter I think we'll just push through the break week. Each quarter something happens to remind me that I need to rest. This time it's a cold that won't go away and exhaustion from weekend travels. We are still covering math and writing, but I'm also trying to play some games and finish up some read alouds.
In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
